Murphey Candler Dam Quarterly Inspection Reports
SAFE DAM PROGRAM
Under Georgia's Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division's SAFE DAM PROGRAM, the Murphey Candler Lake Dam is classified as Category 1 Bridge. The Safe Dams Program is responsible for developing and maintaining an inventory of dams, classifying dams, and ensuring compliance of all regulated dams. To be considered a dam under the Georgia Safe Dams Act, a structure must either be at least 25 feet tall (vertical height) or store at least 100 acre-feet (volume) at maximum storage. If the structure also meets the criteria for a Category I dam, it is regulated under the Act and a permit is required from EPD.
Each quarter, all Category 1 dams in Georgia must be inspected by a Safe Dams qualified Engineer-of-Record (EOR). For the purposes of the Safe Dam Program, an EOR has the demonstrated expertise through training, education, and experience to be considered a subject matter expert in the design, operation, and maintenance of dams built and operated in the State of Georgia.
