GDOT TRANSFORM I-285/400 Improvement Project Information

Updated: 2/9/2023

Progress

  • The majority of the new ramps and connecting lanes along I-285 and SR 400 are open to traffic.

  • Recently the last big exit change of the Transform 285/400 project was completed and opened to motorists.

  • The final, new SR 400 southbound exiting pattern for Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive opened to traffic on Dec. 19.

  • Motorists traveling SR 400 southbound to Abernathy Road or Hammond Drive will now exit approximately 1 mile sooner at Exit 5 North Springs MARTA just before Spalding Drive.

Drivers are making decisions to exit sooner, which takes slower moving traffic away from the main lanes on I-285 and SR 400 and allows through-traffic to flow better. Many safety and mobility improvements are already being realized within the area.

Up Next

The remaining connections expected to be complete in early 2024:

  • Improvements on Peachtree Dunwoody Road, Glenridge Drive, and Abernathy Road, including widening, paving, and traffic signal timing.

  • The new shared-use path between Johnson Ferry Road and Peachtree Dunwoody Road is nearing completion. It will connect PATH 400 to future planned bicycle/pedestrian facilities.

  • Final paving on I-285 to deliver a smooth ride, striping, ITS connections, clean up, and punch-list work will continue through 2024.

Background

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) Transform 285/400 Improvement project is designed to help reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety in the area near the I-285/SR 400 interchange in metro Atlanta. This priority project adds new flyover ramps, new collector-distributor lanes and other facilities to aid east-west travel along I-285 and north-south travel along SR 400. The project will improve 4.3 miles of I-285 from west of Roswell Road to east of Ashford Dunwoody Road and 6.2 miles along SR 400 from the Glenridge Connector to Spalding Drive. This work includes noise barriers in the vicinity of I-285/GA 400.  Some of these will be adjacent to the city limits of Brookhaven.  To find out more information about the current plans for Transform 285/400 Improvements visit GDOT's project site concerning Transform 285/400.  There is a menu on the top of the website directing to the Improvements, I-285 Lane Closures,Traffic Impacts, Environmental and Historical information. Also, scrolling through the bottom of the website is a green shaded link called “Helpful Resources” which includes a link to the Noise Barrier Schedules: I-285 & SR 400.
