In November 2023 the De Kalb County voters approved funding for a Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax (SPLOST), a.k.a. SPLOST II.  This 1 percent increase in the County’s sales tax rate is restricted in use to transportation infrastructure, public safety facilities, and maintenance of existing capital assets only.

Included in the transportation infrastructure improvements program for SPLOST II are improvements for the intersection of Caldwell Road and Redding Road.  The project proposes a realignment of Caldwell Road from south of the entrance to Ashford Park to Redding Road to align with the section of Caldwell Road east of Redding Road.  The new intersection will be upgraded to a raised all-way stop.  The project will include the construction of a 10’ multi-use path on the north (park) side of Caldwell, a 5’ sidewalk on the south side of Caldwell, and bike lanes along both sides of Caldwell within the construction limits by the current Bicycle, Pedestrian, and Trail Plan.  This project includes additional parking along the north side of Caldwell Road adjacent to Ashford Park and between Redding Road and Cravenridge Drive.

It is important to note that the above image for this project is preliminary in concept and, as such, is subject to revision as the design process continues.  Please consider this image as a "footprint" from which the final construction plans will be based.

DESIGN UPDATES

  1. The City Council decided, based upon resident input, to remove the proposed parallel parking on the south side of Caldwell Road from Redding Road to Cynthia Drive. This change will require a slight redesign of the southeast corner of the proposed Caldwell/Redding intersection.
  2. The City Council decided, based upon resident input, to proceed with a traffic study at the intersection of Redding Road and Peachtree Road to support the modification of the existing traffic pattern to allow for two left turn lanes.
