Brookhaven’s City Hall/City Centre project makes progress
Site preparation underway for new downtown community space
Brookhaven, GA, Dec. 19, 2023 – Just two months after the City of Brookhaven kicked off construction of its exciting City Centre project, the construction site has been swarming with activity with several site preparation benchmarks completed.
In coordination with DeKalb County, an existing water main that conflicted with the excavation for the new City Hall was rerouted. A new route for the 8-inch water main was designed installed, tested and is in service and no longer in conflict with the construction activities.
Meanwhile, mass excavation remains underway and shoring is continuing around the building footprint. All shoring piles needed for building construction have drilling completed.
“We hit the ground running on this project, and so far everything is proceeding extremely well,” said Mayor John Ernst. As my term draws to a close, I leave this in the capable hands of the new mayor and council in 2024 and beyond.”
The coordination for the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) sustainable energy coordination is ongoing. The Goal of the new City Hall Building is LEED Gold. Currently, the project point status is 53 points out of the 60 needed for the LEED Gold Certification. LEED certification provides a framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings, which offer environmental, social and governance benefits.
The City Hall is funded with Urban Redevelopment Bonds that will be repaid from the Special Service District. Homesteaded residential property owners are not being taxed for the Brookhaven City Hall.
The current budget for the Brookhaven City Hall totals $78 million. Of this amount, $63.5 million is for construction cost and the balance for soft costs and contingency.
