Storm Sewer Rehabilitation: Caldwell Road near MAA Brookhaven

RESS, one of Brookhaven's On-Demand Stormwater Contractors, completed replacement of the drainage system at this location in early Spring 2023.  

Background

Drainage pipe, corrugated metal pipe (CMP), installed when the roadway was constructed, has a useful life of between 30-50 years.  After that period, it's not uncommon for pipes to experience significant corrosion along their flow lines and in other locations.  Manufacturing and installation defects that previously were undetectable become exaggerated, and failure could occur at anytime.  Typical failures involve cave-ins and sink holes above the weak points in the pipes.  Many times, failures that have existed for several years aren't discovered until a sink hole emerges.

The drainage system at this location failed in the Winter of 2022, resulting in a sinkhole in Caldwell Rd and adjacent to the sidewalks near the catch basins. The failed pipe allowed road foundation materials to wash into the storm sewer resulting in the sinkholes and street settlement.

The rehabilitation work consisted of replacement  of 18" CMP with 18" A-2000 PVC under the roadway, replacement of two (2) catch basins, replacement of the 18" pipe from the eastern catch basin to the existing junction box, reseting the existing granite curb, and surface restoration of road crossings and easement restoration.
