Major Brookhaven thoroughfare gets an overhaul

Entirety of Johnson Ferry Road to be paved this summer

Brookhaven, GA, April 24, 2023 – Patching and potholes no more.  At its regular business meeting on April 11, Brookhaven awarded a contract to C. W. Matthews for the repaving of Johnson Ferry Road from the city limits of Sandy Springs to the city limits of Chamblee.

The project will be a full depth reclamation, which will require milling approximately 4”-5” of the existing asphalt and then pulverizing the underlying material an additional 13” to 15” and mixing it with Portland Cement to completely rebuild the road from the substrate foundation.

“The problem with spot-patching Johnson Ferry Road is that there is not a solid substrate under the asphalt.  We’re going to take the whole road down all the way to the Piedmont clay and start fresh,” said Brookhaven Public Works Director Don Sherrill. “When built properly, that road should last 20 years or more with maybe just the top surface course needing to be replaced, even with all the traffic.”

Johnson Ferry Road is a major arterial thoroughfare, connecting Chamblee, Brookhaven, and Sandy Springs.  When laser tested in 2021, Johnson Ferry Road had an average Pavement Condition Index (PCI) rating of 61 with a low of 44.  The scale is based on 1 to 100, with 100 representing a new, pristine street.

“The residents of Brookhaven want and deserve good roads, and I couldn’t agree more. When neighboring residents pass through the City of Brookhaven, we want them to know where they are as soon as they cross the border by the quality of the road they are on,” said Mayor John Ernst. “This is the next necessary step to ensure the City of Brookhaven has the best roads in the state of Georgia.”

In total, there are 10,790 linear feet, or 2.04 miles that will be paved. Paving is set to begin this summer and conclude before the start of the next school year, weather permitting.  While under construction, commuters will see delays due to lane closures on Johnson Ferry Road.  Updates on the progress of construction and what drivers can expect will be posted on the Public Works webpage at www.BrookhavenGA.gov/PublicWorks
