Crews start demolition work on Nancy Creek Road bridge

Brookhaven, GA, Oct. 19, 2022 The contractor for the City of Brookhaven has started the demolition process of the Nancy Creek Road bridge. The first phase of preparation for the demolition is the relocation of DeKalb County water lines, currently attached to the existing bridge.

The city’s Public Works Department anticipates that once the water lines are moved, the demolition process will be finished in two weeks.

“The DeKalb County Department of Water Management has been a great partner in expediting this emergency repair,” said Don Sherrill, Brookhaven Public Works Director. “Once the Water line is removed, the bridge demolition will begin. The good news is, with the progress we are making, we are a little ahead of the schedule for completion.”

The bridge was closed in July after engineers with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) discovered “severe structural issues” during a routine inspection.

Residents on the west side of the bridge must access the neighborhood from Old Johnson Ferry Road until further notice. Commuters using W. Nancy Creek Road to travel between Ashford Dunwoody Road and Sandy Springs must detour via Johnson Ferry Road or I-285. Residents are strongly encouraged to avoid this construction area while the bridge replacement is underway.

The bridge is currently on schedule for completion by end of Spring 2023. Original estimates called for a one-year demo and rebuilding schedule.
