2023 Paving Program

Johnson Ferry Road Paving

****COMPLETED PROJECT****

The 2023 Capital Street Paving Program contract was awarded to C.W. Mathews Contracting Co., Inc. for the reconstruction of Johnson Ferry Road between the city limits of Sandy Springs and Chamblee. The project required removal of approximately 4”-5” of the existing asphalt to recycle, and then pulverize the underlying base material an additional 13” to 15”, mixing it with Portland Cement and compacting it to completely rebuild the road base. Two courses of asphalt, one layer a level & binder course, and the second layer the final surface course completed the road reconstruction.

***THIS PROJECT WAS CONSIDERED SUBSTANTIALLY COMPLETE AS OF 9/18/23.***

FACTS:

  • In total, there are 10,790 linear feet, or 2.04 miles that were reconstructed and paved.

  • The project was staged in roughly 1,000-foot sections.

  • Contractor was allowed to work on Saturdays and/or Sundays, depending on project progress.

  • To limit traffic congestion, the contractor performed the full-depth reclamation work by day and lay asphalt during the overnight hours.
