The Brookhaven Beat: A glimpse into the work of Brookhaven Police

Brookhaven, GA, March 11, 2019 – During the week of March 4-10, Brookhaven Police responded to 1,717 calls which included 134 incident reports, 77 citations, and 26 arrests.  This is a sampling of some of those calls:

Sun. March 10 – Hit and Run, 3500 Block of Buford Hwy:  Shortly after it was reported stolen, (see below) a green 2007 Toyota Camry was involved in a hit-and-run accident.  The Camry fled the scene, but sustained passenger side and trunk damage. 

Later in the evening, officers responded to a License Plate Reader (LPR) hit and conducted a felony stop on a green 2007 Toyota Camry in the 1000 block of Standard Drive. Four juveniles were removed from the vehicle and one was charged. The others were released to parents. 

Sat. March 9 – Auto Theft (2x), 2800 Block of Buford Hwy and 1300 Block of Briarwood Rd:  Officers responded to a call on Buford Highway regarding a stolen green 2007 Toyota Camry. The victim left the car running at the gas pumps while he went inside the convenience store. The vehicle was unlocked. When the victim returned, the car was gone.  Upon review of the store`s surveillance video, a male with a white jacket and medium length hair can be seen walking to the reporting party`s vehicle. The suspect entered the vehicle and drove out of the parking lot southbound on Buford Hwy towards Atlanta.  

In an apparently unrelated case, another victim reported his 2007 Hyundai Elantra stolen. The victim stated the vehicle was parked in front of his apartment building.  While taking out the trash, the victim started his vehicle and left it running as he walked toward the dumpster on the other side of the building.  When he returned from the trash dumpster, the car was gone.

Thurs. March 7 – Death Investigation, 2900 Block of Clairmont RdOfficers responded to a medical call. The occupant was found unconscious in his hotel room and slumped over a chair. Staff and hotel patrons began CPR on the patient until AMR arrived and took over. After about an hour, AMR stopped life-saving efforts, as the patient was deceased. Family members advised officers of the patient’s previous history of drug addiction. White powdery substance was seen in plain sight in the patient’s room during CPR. HAZMAT was contacted and tested the substance, which tested positive for heroine. CID and CSI responded to the scene, followed by the medical examiner.

Wed. March 6 – Theft by Receiving, Buford Hwy and Clairmont RdOfficers received a LPR hit for a stolen license tag. Officers located the vehicle at a retail store nearby and watched the driver remove the license plate from the vehicle. Officers stopped the driver who could not provide a valid reason for having the stolen license plate displayed on his wife’s vehicle.  The driver was taken to the DeKalb County Jail.

Tues. March 5 – Stolen Vehicle Recovered, Buford Hwy and N. Druid Hills: - A LPR alert was received on a stolen vehicle on N Druid Hills Rd. An officer was washing his police car  at the Hi Speed Car Wash when he saw the suspect vehicle in the vacuum line next to him. The driver was outside the vehicle and as he the officer approached, the driver turned and placed his hands behind his back. No force was used.  The driver was taken into custody and he refused to provide his name, but it was later revealed that he was a 14-year-old convicted felon with a long criminal history.  He was taken to DeKalb Juvenile Intake for processing.

Mon. March 4 - Stolen Vehicle/Vehicle Recovered, 1300 Block of Keys Lake Dr.:  Officers responded to a call about a stolen gray 2012 Honda Civic was removed from the location overnight. The victim advised that they key to the vehicle was left in his girlfriend’s vehicle which was also burglarized. The vehicle was detected by a LPR hit on the I-85 SB entrance ramp from North Druid Hills.  The vehicle was later recovered on Snapfinger Rd in south DeKalb by DeKalb Police in good condition.

Mon. March 4 – Domestic Dispute - 1300 Block of N. Druid Hills: Officers responded to a dispute between roommates.  Both parties made allegations of assault against each other. The female alleged an attempted sexual assault by the male but was unwilling to make a statement and was evasive during questioning. The male was also evasive and deceptive during questioning.  Each party's allegations could not be corroborated, and some portions of their allegations were inconsistent.
