Chief Brandon Gurley is a dedicated law enforcement professional who joined the Brookhaven Police Department in April 2013, just ten days after the city appointed its first Police Chief, Gary Yandura. With over 20 years of marriage and a loving family, Chief Gurley, alongside his wife and two teenage children, enjoys the company of a spirited Shih Tzu.

As a police officer and leader, Chief Gurley’s unwavering commitment lies in a life of civil service, safety, and protection. He had the unique opportunity to be involved in the inception and growth of the City of Brookhaven’s police department. His journey included commanding day shift patrol units, leading the Support Services Division, and eventually overseeing the Patrol Division with its 44 dedicated members.

Chief Gurley’s dedication and skills were recognized with promotions to Deputy Chief of Police in March 2019, and to Chief of Police in September 2022, following Chief Yandura’s retirement. Throughout his law enforcement career, which began in 1999 with the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office, Chief Gurley showcased his versatility by working in various areas, such as the 911 center, detention center, patrol, criminal investigations, community engagement, and media relations.

He has a rich history of serving as a team leader for the Paulding County SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiations Team in both Paulding and Sandy Springs. Chief Gurley’s exceptional contributions have earned him numerous commendations and awards, including the Life Saving Award, Medal of Valor, Medal of Merit, Deputy of the Year, and the Chief’s Coin of Excellence.

Furthermore, Chief Gurley is not only a law enforcement expert but also an accomplished scholar. He holds a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies in Criminal Justice Administration from Georgia State University, along with a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and an Associate’s degree in liberal studies. He’s a proud graduate of the Northwestern University School for Police Staff and Command and the Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange Training Program.

Beyond his roles within the police department, Chief Gurley actively represents the department on various professional boards and organizations. His focus is to foster an environment where businesses can thrive, and residents can live in safety. As an enterprise leader, he is deeply committed to collaborating with city leadership and community leaders of all backgrounds, ensuring a diverse and inclusive approach to community policing.

Deputy Chief Jerry A. Lewis Jr. joined the Brookhaven Police Department on January 30, 2023, following a distinguished 28-year career with the DeKalb County Police Department. In his previous role, Lewis's leadership spanned across divisions including the Uniform Division, Criminal Investigation Division, Office of the Chief of Police, and the Office of the Department of Public Safety. His commitment to law enforcement is further showcased through his educational achievements, having earned a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University, and graduating from prestigious courses like the Senior Management Institute for Police and the Southern Police Institute.

Deputy Chief Lewis's dedication to service is not confined to police work. He served in the United States Army at Ft. Stewart, Hinesville, GA, from 1992 to 1994 and the Georgia Army National Guard from 1994 to 2000. This military background enriches his multifaceted experience in the field of public service.

In addition to his professional endeavors, Deputy Chief Lewis actively participates in several renowned police organizations. His memberships include NOBLE National and Georgia Chapter, International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), Atlanta METROPOL, SPIAA, and The Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Incorporated.

Outside his professional life, Deputy Chief Lewis values family, sharing his home with his wife Sarita, their four children, and a lively German Shepherd.

Major Lonnie Napier commands the department’s Uniform Patrol Division. Major Napier joined the Brookhaven Police Department in July 2013. Since joining the Brookhaven Police Department as a patrol officer, Major Napier was later reassigned to the Criminal Investigations Division as a detective before being promoted to Corporal. Major Napier then worked as a supervisor in the Criminal Investigations Division until he was promoted to Sergeant and reassigned to the patrol division. In 2016, Major Napier was promoted to Lieutenant and since earning that portion he has worked as both a patrol commander and as a unit manager in the Support Services Division.

Prior to joining the Brookhaven Police Department, Major Napier worked for the College Park Police Department, Fulton County’s Sheriff’s Office, and the Morris Brown College Police Department. Throughout his 22 year career, Major Napier has served in several different capacities. Prior to being promoted to the rank of Sergeant, Major Napier worked as a first line officer in courts, investigations, detention, and patrol. Although he enjoys all aspects of law enforcement, he considers his assignments as a detective and field training officer to be most rewarding.

Major Napier earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of West Georgia, a master’s degree in Public Administration from Troy University, and a master’s degree in Criminal Justice and Public Safety Leadership from Mercer University.

Major Jeffery Gant, a seasoned law enforcement professional, leads the Field Operations Division at the Brookhaven Police Department. With a passion for community engagement, Major Gant has been a driving force in fostering a collaborative and service-oriented approach within the department. Over his distinguished career, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills in roles ranging from Sniper Team Leader to Tactical Commander during his decade-long service on the SWAT Team.

Major Gant's extensive experience includes overseeing critical areas such as training, patrol, criminal investigations, crime suppression, records, and more. His commitment to excellence is evident through numerous commendations, including multiple Medal of Valor awards and the Chief’s Medal of Merit. Beyond his professional achievements, Major Gant finds fulfillment in outdoor pursuits like camping and hiking, along with active participation in competitive shooting events.

As a man of Faith and a dedicated family man, Major Gant cherishes his role as a loving husband to Katie, a proud father to their three children, and a caring owner to a sweet pit-bull rescue named Bowie.
