Move ensures no property tax dollars used for PCG Project

Brookhaven, GA, Mar. 1, 2018 – On Wednesday, the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) voted to incorporate Phase II (Atlanta/Brookhaven line to North Druid Hills Rd) of the Peachtree Creek Greenway (PCG) into the Metropolitan Atlanta Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP), awarding the City of Brookhaven $2.7 million in federal funding toward the project.

Movement of Phase II (Atlanta/Brookhaven line to North Druid Hills Rd) into the TIP ensures that no Brookhaven property tax dollars will be used towards completion of the either phase.  Phase I (North Druid Hills Rd to Briarwood Rd) will be funded by the City’s Hotel/Motel tax, as will the City’s 20% match on Phase II (Atlanta/Brookhaven line to North Druid Hills Rd).

“We are very grateful to the regional trail groups, and to the ARC Board and their talented staff for working with us to ensure the success of this critical link,” said Mayor John Ernst.  “When the Peachtree Creek Greenway plan was adopted, we made a commitment to see this through to completion, while honoring the fiscally conservative values our City was founded on.  The ARC approval of funding is a milestone in this continuing effort.”

The ARC is the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for federal transportation funding in the Atlanta region.  Movement of the project into the plan, designates the Greenway as a federally-funded transportation project and highlights the Greenway’s regional importance.  Phase II (Atlanta/Brookhaven line to North Druid Hills Rd) of the PCG stretches east from North Druid Hills Rd to the Atlanta city line on the west.  Brookhaven continues to partner with Path 400, the Atlanta Beltline, the South Fork Conservancy, and the City of Atlanta to use this north fork trail to connect these projects together, creating a true regional, pedestrian transportation hub for areas north, south and east of Atlanta.

The Greenway master plan was unanimously adopted by the Brookhaven City Council in 2016 after extensive public input, and engineering and design of Phase I (North Druid Hills Rd to Briarwood Rd) began in 2017.  A formal groundbreaking is anticipated before the end of this year.
