Inspection Process

During a construction or renovation process, the Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office (BFMO) requires inspections to ensure conformity to approved plans and compliance to all applicable codes and ordinances.  Fire Inspectors will conduct on-site construction or renovation inspections at 50%, 80% and 100% intervals.  Additional inspections maybe required.

50%

When the following structural components are in place and open for a field review a 50% inspection shall be requested. Example: Fire walls, vertical shafts, stairways, smoke stops, plenum spaces, hazardous area separations, roof and ceiling assemblies, corridors, exit doors, common door openings with proper width, bathrooms prior to installation of toilet and sinks, etc.

Also, hydrants shall be operational and driving surfaces maintained to provide all-weather driving capabilities for emergency vehicles. 

80%

Approved stamped plans for all fire protection systems shall be on site. All installation work on all fire protection systems shall be in accordance to approved stamped plans.

Other safety features that will be inspected include: Exit Signs, Emergency Lights, Door locking Devices, and Elevator Recall Systems.

100%

All fire safety components, GA Accessibility requirements, and applicable codes shall be met during this phase. All documentation on fire safety devices installed must provided to the BFMO prior to any approvals.

All fire protection and detection equipment shall be operational and certified by a reputable company that utilizes an issued competency number by from the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office.

All temporary certificates of occupancy released will only be allowed for moving furniture, equipment, or training of prospective employees. Business operations cannot be conducted until the 100% (final) inspection has been approved by the Brookhaven Fire Marshal’s Office and/or Building Official.

Fixed suppression systems, fire alarms, and grease hood inspections: These components are inspected to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards.

The Fire Marshal’s Office requires certification letters and/test documentation on the following:

  • Fire sprinkler installation or alteration*
  • Fire alarm installation or alteration*
  • Commercial cooking hoods*
  • Underground and above ground piping*
  • Fixed fire suppression systems*
  • Emergency Responders Radio Coverage*. Please see DeKalb County Fire Marshal’s Office memo dated January 1, 2019 for requirements.

Food Truck Inspections: Food trucks are inspected with a goal of providing a safe operating environment for vendors, customers and pedestrians. Please contact the Fire Marshal’s Office for more information about food truck inspections.

Event Inspections: Conducted before an event to ensure compliance of all fire codes and life safety standards. Please contact the Fire Marshal’s Office for more information about event inspections.
