Brookhaven, GA, Sept. 12, 2019 -- In the first major construction project utilizing a portion of the $40 million Park Bond capital improvement monies, the Brookhaven City Council unanimously authorized Mayor John Ernst to enter into a contract with Waterworks Aqua Design, LLC for the renovation of the Briarwood Park pool located at 2235 Briarwood Way. This is the first significant capital improvement undertaking by the City since the bond referendum was given a nod by voters last November.

The contract, for $3,531,052, will cover construction of a new pool and pool house and added amenities which is less than the original estimate of $4 million. Waterworks Aqua Design, based in Cumming, GA, has been serving North Georgia and metro Atlanta for 19 years. They have received numerous awards and international recognition for their pool designs and construction.

The original plan for the renovations at this popular City pool called for merely upgrading the pool and pool house. But research showed it would be more cost effective to construct a new pool and pool house as opposed to updating the existing facility to meet today’s health codes and standards, according to Brian Borden, Brookhaven Parks and Recreation director.

The improvements, designed by Lose Designs based on input from residents and local swim teams, will include a new zero-entry pool with spray features for play. A portion of the pool will transition into a 75-foot long six-lane competition section that will be used by swim teams that operate out of the park. A nearby “cool surface” pool deck will feature a new pavilion, bleachers, and umbrellas for shade. The new 4,000 square-foot pool house will contain restrooms, locker rooms, concessions, ticket office and a lifeguard room.

“With the parks bond referendum approved last year, the residents of Brookhaven delivered a clear mandate for us to follow through with our City founders’ vision of a top-notch park system that can be enjoyed by everyone,” noted Mayor Ernst. “This inaugural construction project will help fulfill the vision of the community granted by voters when they approved the referendum. I am pleased that this project’s cost is less than estimated.”

Work on the project should begin in the near future and be completed in time for the opening of the swimming season on Memorial Day, 2020.
