City Council wrap up: Highlights from the June 12 meeting

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, June 14, 2018 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its June 12 meeting at Brookhaven City Hall.

  • The Mayor and Council honored JenCare Senior Medical Center for its commitment to delivering superior healthcare to Medicare-eligible seniors.
  • The Council conducted the first of three public hearings for setting the millage rate in 2018.  The recommendation of 2.74 mills is the same millage as 2016 and 2017. The second and third public hearings will be held Thursday, June 28, at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. After the final public hearing, the millage rate will be formally adopted at the June 28, 2018, meeting at 7 p.m.
  • The Council voted unanimously to defer for 90 days a rezoning request from R-75, O-I and RM-75 to RM-75 for a proposed development consisting of 226 townhomes by Ardent Companies for properties on Buford Highway and Bramblewood Drive.
  • The Council unanimously approved with conditions a rezoning request from R-100 to R-A8 to develop nine townhomes by Minerva USA on Kendrick Road.
  • The Council unanimously approved a 6-month moratorium on all land use petitions and land development permits on the section of Buford Highway within the city limits.  This moratorium ensures that the vision created for this area with public input for the Zoning Re-write is preserved until it can be enacted into law.
  • The Council unanimously approved extending pool hours during the summer season. With this action, the Briarwood, Murphey Candler and Lynwood pools will open two hours early (at 10 a.m.) on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays starting June 20.
  • The Council authorized $150,000 for a contract for the design of intersection improvements at Peachtree Road and Ashford Dunwoody Road.  This intersection was one of the recommendations included in Ashford Dunwoody Corridor Study, approved in 2017 after extensive public input.
  • The Council authorized $127,000 for a contract with Gresham, Smith and Partners to perform a corridor study for North Druid Hills Road.  The study is scheduled to begin in August with a minimum of three open houses to solicit public input.
