City Council wrap up: Highlights from the July 24 meeting

Brookhaven, GA, July 27, 2018 – The Brookhaven City Council acted on several items in its July 24 meeting at Brookhaven City Hall. 

·         The Mayor and Council honored all of the Murphey Candler Baseball and Murphey Candler Girls Fast Pitch Softball League Tournament Champions for the 2018 season.

·         The Mayor and Council received a presentation from Courtney Rogers at Davenport & Company regarding the “triple-A” credit ratings from Moody’s and Standard & Poors.

·         The Mayor and Council unanimously approved an ordinance to amend the Alcohol Code and place the “Brunch Bill” referendum question on the Nov. 6 ballot.  The referendum would allow the sale of alcohol as early as 11 a.m. on Sundays.

·         The Brookhaven Park Site Specific Park Master Plan was pulled from the agenda.

·         The Council unanimously approved the Osborne and Lynwood Parks Site Specific Master Plans, and reaffirmed Site Specific Master Plans for Ashford, Blackburn, Briarwood, Fernwood, Georgian Hills, Murphey Candler I and Murphey Candler II Parks.

·         The Council authorized a change order in the amount of $45,412 for the renovation of six of the Blackburn Park tennis courts, due to a discovery of bad soil conditions beneath the renovated tennis courts.  With this change, the total cost of the renovations is now $310,993.

·         The Council approved a resolution placing a referendum question on the Nov. 6, ballot which, if passed, would authorize up to $40 million in capital improvements to Brookhaven parks and facilities.

·         The Council unanimously approved a contract in the amount of $113,690 with Pro Building System to establish a Municipal Maintenance Yard at 1793 Briarwood Road.  When complete, this area will eliminate the need to store equipment at the current Osborne Park location.

·         The Council approved the use of eminent domain to acquire the property and easements on several tracts of land for a total of $1.48 million along the Peachtree Creek Greenway.
