Brookhaven Council adopts City Centre Master Plan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Brookhaven, GA, Aug 9, 2022 Following over a year and a half of public input opportunities, the Brookhaven City Council adopted the City Centre Master Plan with amendments during its Aug. 9 meeting.

“This plan will serve as a guide for what a central area in Brookhaven could include, and guide development in the area of the future City Hall at the Brookhaven MARTA station,” said Assistant City Manager Patrice Ruffin.

The City began the input process with a round of public meetings and a drop-in center in December 2020, along with an interactive project website that included an initial survey, a public forum and an interactive mapping tool. The website also contains background information, survey results, and community engagement summaries.

Residents also had the chance to learn about the Brookhaven City Centre master plan process at a series of District pop-ups and in public input meetings. The City Centre team later presented its recommendations at the Brookhaven Planning Commission and City Council meetings. In April, the Planning Commission recommended approval of the plan.

“I want to thank our residents who participated in the City Centre process and gave their input for this important planning initiative,” said Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst. “With the announcement of a future permanent City Hall at the Brookhaven MARTA Station, and the adoption of this plan, I’m excited to see what the future holds for Brookhaven.”

In addition to guiding Brookhaven in creating a vibrant corridor with a strong identity, the plan also has the goals of increasing traffic efficiency, improving pedestrian and cyclist accessibility and safety, and beautifying the area through art, landscape and a cohesive vision of the corridor. Instead of focusing on just one central standalone area, the plan suggests developing a series of nodes along the corridor connected by multi-use paths and pedestrian crossings, creating a village feel.

Amendments adopted as part of the City Council approval include removing references to a City Hall at any location other than MARTA, all references to redevelopment or building at Brookhaven Park, removing references to lane removals on Peachtree Road, and adding a crosswalk on Ashford Dunwoody Road.

“I want to thank all the citizens who participated in this huge and impactful project,” said Mayor Pro Tem Linley Jones, who represents District 1. “I personally was thrilled with so much of it, including the plans for Dresden, the plans for Apple Valley, the public art plan and it’s all just wonderful.”

“I believe this project will only enhance Brookhaven’s unique character and identity,” said District 2 Councilman John Park. “This could not have happened without the residents who participated in the process.”

“This was an exciting and lengthy project, with robust public input,” said District 3 Councilwoman Madeleine Simmons. “It was great to see people really interested in talking about connectivity and creating ways to bring people together via our various entertainment centers throughout the City.”

“We all know that as we are doing urban planning, there are several elements that must be considered when you are doing a project of this magnitude, and I’m encouraged that this planning exercise did a great job of pulling all those forward to include the Peachtree Road Livable Centers Initiative (LCI),” said District 4 Councilman John Funny. “It also allowed a great opportunity for public participation.”
