FBI NIBRS Violent Crime Data

National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) administers the National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) to capture data on each single crime incident, as well as on separate offenses within the same incident, including information on victims, known offenders, relationships between victims and offenders, arrestees, and property involved in crimes.  The Brookhaven Police Department began voluntarily submitting data to the NIBRS program in October 2019 after transitioning from the FBI's previous Summary Reporting System (SRS), to which BPD voluntarily submitted data from its incenption.

The FBI Crime Data Explorer provides resources to review this data, which provides helpful demographic comparisons especially for BPD presentation and use of force instances.  Some relevant portions of the FBI data for Violent Crime Offenses are included below.  Note that the data are from 2019; as of 05/07/2021, the 2020 data have not been published by the FBI.
