Social Justice, Race and Equity Commission

The Brookhaven Social Justice, Race, and Equity Commission (SJREC) was formed on Sept. 22 by a resolution passed unanimously by City Council, in response to the civil unrest and demonstrations in the summer of 2020 to take an intensice review about where Brookhaven stood in terms of justice, equity and inclusion in several key areas.  The Commission served to not only start a conversation, but also enact a framework that will result in real action.

The SJREC reviewed the City’s Vision and Mission Statement and Charter, policies and procedures, public engagement and communication outreach, and the Brookhaven Police Department’s continuum use of force policy, oversight, and accountability to identify, evaluate and report potential recommendations to the City Council. The commission's 37 members included representatives from the various faith, education, and business communities, all ages from youth to seniors, and Brookhaven Character Area geographic locations.

The full commission assigned subcommittees in each of the aforementioned areas and met monthly to report progress and receive input from the community at large.  The SJREC's final report was delivered to the Brookhaven City Council on December 14, 2021.
