Project Type:

Project Status:
Completed

The existing 30” corrugated metal pipe (CMP) crossing Apple Valley Rd, north of Dresden Drive, collapsed and caused a pavement failure in Apple Valley Road.  The failure was backfilled with #57 stone and GAB and compacted.  Flows through the pipe from intense rains siphoned a large percentage of the backfill through the pipe, and the sink hole continues to grow in size.  On June 25, 2020, Apple Valley Road was closed between Dresden Drive and Parkside Drive, a section of approximately 65 feet in length.

The Scope of Work for this project is to replace the full length of pipe from the upstream drip inlet to the downstream catch basin.  The depth of the pipe upstream is approximately 7 feet, and the depth at the downstream catch basin is approximately 11 feet.

The project will be bid on a LUMP SUM basis to remove and replace the 30 inch culvert and perform all ancillary work required to permanently repair and reopen Apple Valley Rd, the right-of-way, and the DeKalb County owned property at the location of the drip inlet.  A list of the items which will likely be impacted and will require replacement is included on the attached Figure.

A utility locate has been called in, and the existing utilities have been marked.  Information related to DeKalb County’s water and sanitary sewer system has been included on the drawing.  For the elevations provided for the drainage system on the drawing, all are based on using the sanitary sewer manhole cover in the middle of Dresden Drive as the benchmark.  The sanitary sewer elevations are taken from DeKalb County’s GIS and are considered the best information available.  The depth of the sanitary sewer inverts to the top of the manhole cover were not re-verified.

The holly bushes should be removed, protected, and restored in an appropriate organic soil mix only after backfilling and compaction has been completed.  The traffic loops should be restored and connected to the signal box.  One set of traffic loops is active, assume the loop furthest from the signal box is the active loop.

All applicable standards and details shall be adhered to, as described in the attachments.
