Brookhaven begins alcohol license suspension

Fraudulent applications noted, suspensions begin in May

Brookhaven, GA, April 23, 2018 – The City of Brookhaven has identified eight business with fraudulent alcohol license renewal applications and began the administrative act of suspending those licenses.

“Based on the evidence gathered on April 7 your application provides false information by failing to acknowledge your business model. Accordingly, the application is fraudulent and violates City of Brookhaven Code,” the suspension letter states.  The suspensions take effect May 18.

The Brookhaven City Council overhauled its alcohol ordinance last fall, after receiving an analysis of crime statistics from the Brookhaven Police Department.  Over a study period from Jan. 1, 2016 through July 23, 2017, Brookhaven Police ascertained that 10 late night establishments with alcohol licenses were associated with a disproportionately high number of police calls.  During this time, Brookhaven Police answered 884 calls for 337 incidents at these locations.

On September 26, the Brookhaven City Council responded by refining its alcohol ordinance and updating its license fee structure.  Under the new law, establishments with disc jockeys, dance floors or stages are classified as entertainment venues, and can pay up to $100,000 for alcohol licenses.  On October 10, 2017, the Brookhaven City Council followed that action by rolling back bar hours to 2 a.m., effective April 10.

Initially, only four establishments were classified as entertainment venues.  The eight that were added are:

  • Acapulco Enterprises, LLC, 3363 Buford Highway, #960
  • Confeti’s, LLC, 3045 Buford Highway
  • Don Pollo Mexican Bar & Grill, 1851 Corporate Blvd
  • El Ocho Billiards, LLC, 3043 Buford Highway
  • La Casa Restaurant Bar & Lounge, 3747 Buford Highway
  • Nina’s Bar & Grill, 3115 Buford Highway
  • Pegasus Restaurant & Lounge, 3375 Buford Highway
  • Arif Lounge, 2847 Buford Highway

“The crimes associated with these late-night entertainment venues drain police resources, and the burden of the costs are on the shoulders of Brookhaven residents.  It ranges from DUI’s to violent crimes such as aggravated assaults and murder,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Gary Yandura.
