Brookhaven launches GIS Open Data site for public use

Brookhaven, GA, Feb. 26, 2018 – In conjunction with the recently redesigned Brookhaven City website at www.BrookhavenGA.gov, the Brookhaven GIS (Geographic Information System) Department has developed an Open Data site for public use and consumption, expanding transparency of the City’s data.

The City of Brookhaven has historically provided a library of maps and an interactive map viewer available on the City’s website for visitors to use. These resources have allowed site visitors to interactively examine various data layers (tax parcel, topographical, zoning, address points, etc.) and view popular stock pdf maps of City services. The site is better organized for viewing or printing. However, the data used to develop these resources had not been easily accessible, until now.

Key datasets used to create the interactive web map and stock pdf maps are now available to view or download for free to various formats through the Brookhaven Open Data site.  A link is available to the site from the City’s Information Technology/GIS web page on the Brookhaven website. Open Data allows interested users to use the same GIS data that is used by city staff to produce their own maps or analyze the data as needed.

Open Data allows users the resources to review and analyze a variety of geographic data ranging from property size and assessed value to flood plain locations, the locations of traffic lights, and much more. Developers can utilize zoning information for project development, topographic contour data for engineering purposes, and residents can identify where their right of way is.

Brookhaven’s Open Data site currently contains approximately to 20 datasets and will grow as others are made available.

“The addition of Open Data to our City website promotes transparency which is crucial to ethical governance and allows citizens, developers, and businesses unparalleled access to GIS data that helps people make better informed decisions and fosters better-informed citizens.” said GIS Manager Christian Saxon.
