City of Brookhaven celebrates Juneteenth

Brookhaven, GA, June 13, 2023 – The City of Brookhaven will celebrate Juneteenth with an event at Lynwood Park, 3360 Osborne Rd NE, in Brookhaven on Monday, June 19 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. to recognize the resilience and heritage of the African American community.

The celebration of Juneteenth is also an opportunity for the community to revisit the significance of this historic moment and the relevance of the Historic Lynwood Park neighborhood with the official unveiling of the Historic Lynwood Park monument signs.

The event will also include:

  • A Juneteenth proclamation that will be presented by Mayor John Ernst, Mayor Pro Tempore Linley Jones.
  • Cross Keys High School will recognize the Lynwood Trailblazers.
  • An African American owned Food Truck - M & M's ComfortZone (@comfortzonem2).

President Joe Biden signed a bill to establish Juneteenth as a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States on June 9, 2021. The holiday commemorates June 19, 1865: the day that Union Army Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas, and informed slaves about their emancipation. More than two years later, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.
