Brookhaven presents designation of Buford Highway as “Buford Highway Cultural Corridor” to the community and the media

City of Brookhaven honors the diversity, culture, and contributions of this vibrant hub.

Brookhaven, GA, Feb. 22, 2022– Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst and members of the Brookhaven Arts and Culture presented a resolution to recognize the vibrant community of Buford Highway and name it as the Buford Highway Corridor.

“The community and businesses along the Buford Highway Cultural Corridor add so much value to the city of Brookhaven and this resolution affords us the opportunity to honor their heritage and contributions,” said Mayor John Ernst.

The resolution, adopted during the Brookhaven City Council’s Jan. 11 meeting, highlights the rich heritage and recommends supporting diverse arts and cultural initiatives and public art that are accessible for and representative of all residents.

Mayor Ernst commended the Brookhaven’s Arts and Culture Commission for their vision and commitment and for working with city staff to draft a resolution that recognizes Buford Highway as a unique and diverse area of the city.

“This designation is both tangible and symbolic.  Of course, it gives us the opportunity to honor and celebrate the heritage and contributions of the culturally and ethnically diverse community of this vibrant area,” said District 4 Councilmember John Funny.

The resolution recognizes the Buford Highway Corridor as a unique, multi-diverse area of the city which offers the opportunity to enhance arts and culture and raise awareness of the importance of design and art incorporated into the community.

“Nowhere in Brookhaven is our diversity more proudly displayed than here on Buford Highway. So, it’s only appropriate, and of great significance, that our first project was to designate Buford Highway as a cultural corridor,” said the Brookhaven Arts and Culture Chairperson Lauren Kiefer.

The new resolution encourages the City of Brookhaven to work in collaboration with the Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce and with the cities of Chamblee and Doraville to coordinate events, signage and marketing for arts and cultural initiatives along Buford Highway.
