2023 was the second full year of the Social Justice, Race and Equity Commission (SJREC) Implementation Plan. Progress to date on the 18 recommendations is best summarized as amending the City’s governing documents to be more inclusive and institutionalizing diversity, equity, inclusion, and welcoming practices. For example, and detailed in the update report, the City Charter was amended to include a welcoming preamble, and the text for appointing boards and commission members was amended to encourage community diversity.

As part of the Comprehensive Plan update process, the City’s vision and mission statements were updated with extensive community engagement. The City has established demographic data collection processes for employee exit interviews, procurement participation, and police use of force.  Finally, the City has developed internal and external surveys to capture diversity, equity, and inclusion knowledge, views, and sentiment.
