Update Feb. 16, 2021
Rental assistance available for DeKalb County residents
On February 9, 2021, DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond announced receipt of a $21 million grant from the Federal Emergency Rental Assistance program. CEO Thurmond convened a Tenant-Landlord Assistance Coalition comprised of public and nonprofit partners. The coalition will provide financial relief to DeKalb renters threatened by eviction and landlords facing revenue losses—both due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Brookhaven Municipal Court (updated 1/11/2021)

Brookhaven Municipal Court’s regularly scheduled court sessions will resume on Monday, Feb. 1, 2021, with special procedures to protect the health and safety of those appearing in court. The Court is currently rescheduling cases that were cancelled during January 2021. Update, Jan. 8, 2021: 
In response to the GA Supreme Court order extending the declaration of a statewide COVID-19 judicial emergency issued on Dec. 23, Brookhaven Chief Judge Jonathan Granade has issued a second order to modify Court appearances. Beginning on Jan. 11, all arraignments and trials in January are cancelled. Cases will be reset and notices sent to the defendants and attorneys. Court staff will still be available to assist the public in person, by email and by phone.

Update, Sept. 22: Brookhaven extends COVID-19 emergency declaration to Nov. 30. More information here.

Update, Aug. 27: The City of Brookhaven approved a new local ordinance requiring the use of face masks in public places within Brookhaven to prevent the escalating spread of COVID-19.  Under the ordinance, all persons are required to wear a mask or face covering while outdoors in an environment in which people who do not reside in the same household cannot maintain at least six feet of physical distance from one another. Update, July 9: Mayor John Ernst has signed an executive order requiring the use of face masks for everyone entering a commercial establishment in Brookhaven to prevent the escalating spread of COVID-19. Read more here.

Update, June 30: The coronavirus pandemic has impacted the local economy, but Brookhaven officials are taking measures to help ease the burden and offer a helping hand to residents and businesses during the economic downturn. Update, June 12: Brookhaven has reopened all playgrounds and outdoor bathrooms for public use as of Friday, June 12. All playgrounds will be cleaned by maintenance staff once a week and the outdoor restrooms will be cleaned on a daily basis. Visitors are encouraged to keep to social distancing guidelines when visiting parks.

Update, May 28: Brookhaven requires face masks as City Hall reopensAs Brookhaven City Hall and other City facilities finalize plans to reopen to the public on June 1, a new City ordinance will require all visitors and employees to wear face masks as the fight continues against the spread of COVID-19. If visitors to any City facility do not have a mask, one will be provided by the City. More details here.

Update, May 20: Brookhaven announces reopening plans for City Hall and parks facilities as COVID-19 prevention continuesBrookhaven plans to reopen City Hall and some parks facilities to the public on June 1, as the fight continues against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Utilizing an innovative split-shift office policy augmented by teleworking, City Hall and parks employees will return to their on-site workspaces on May 26 to prepare for receiving the public on June 1. Update, April 27: Brookhaven establishes guidelines & temp permits for restaurants-  Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst signed an executive order which establishes guidelines and best practices for the restaurant industry to comply with the governor’s executive order, which allows these establishments to begin to resume operations today, April 27.  In an effort to assist restaurants with responsible social distancing compliance, the order includes an innovative Temporary Outdoor Restaurant Operations Permit which allows the use of tents and parking lot areas for seating, where they might not otherwise be permitted by City code. ​

Police

The Brookhaven Police Department will begin a phased return to operations on June 1, 2020.  Between June 1 and June 14, BPD Headquarters will remain CLOSED TO THE PUBLIC as administrative staff return to the facility to ensure that safeguards are in place for public access.  Police Headquarters is expected to re-open to community members on Monday, June 15, 2020.  Pursuant to Brookhaven City Ordinance, adopted by the City Council during their May 26 meeting, all visitors to the Police Headquarters, including those persons reporting for Municipal Court, will be required to wear cloth face masks at all times while in the facility.  In addition, all persons wishing to access the building will be screened for fever; those persons with a temperature of 100.4 or higher will not be admitted.  Community members are asked to avoid congregating in large groups in and around the Headquarters building, especially during the times before and after court.

Brookhaven Municipal Court’s regularly scheduled court sessions will resume on Monday, June 15, 2020, with special procedures to protect the health and safety of those appearing in court. The Court is currently rescheduling cases that were cancelled due to COVID-19 during March, April, May, and early June.  If you are a defendant, witness, or attorney in a case that has been scheduled for court and you fall into any of the Court’s posted COVID-19 risk categories, prior to your court date contact the Court by phone (404-637-0660) or email (Court@BrookhavenGA.gov) to have the case reset to a future date.
