Brookhaven announces emergency notifications to keep community informed

Brookhaven, GA, Sept. 17, 2018 – The City of Brookhaven is excited to announce that Brookhaven Alert, powered by Smart911, is now available to all residents.  Brookhaven Alert is a free service that allows individuals to sign up for notifications sent from state and local authorities.  Brookhaven Alert keeps residents and travelers informed on potentially hazardous situations involving weather, traffic and other emergencies.   A presentation on Brookhaven Alert will be given at the Mayor’s Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 6:00 p.m. at Brookhaven City Hall, 4362 Peachtree Road in Brookhaven.

“Brookhaven Alert enables authorities to notify the community in real time,” said Brookhaven Police Chief Gary Yandura.  “This service allows for critical communication with the public and provides individuals with the information needed to stay safe or take precautions during hazardous or emergency situations.”

Brookhaven Alert enables residents and travelers to Brookhaven to sign up to receive timely and actionable emergency alerts via email, text or voice message on their cell phones. They can also identify when and how they are alerted and communicated with before, during, and after emergencies. Residents can sign up today at www.brookhavenga.gov/brookhavenalert or by downloading the Smart911 app in their mobile app store.

“Citizens will receive notifications that will improve safety in our city and help inform residents of potentially lifesaving actions they may need to take in an emergency,” said Chief Yandura. “The information sent out by Brookhaven Alert, powered by Smart911 though emergency notifications allows both residents and first responders to be better informed in an emergency situation.”

“When authorities have information about a situation, such as storm or emergency they can be more effective in providing information to the public and appropriate assistance,” said Brookhaven Emergency Management Coordinator Paul White.  “We encourage all members of our community and their families’ sign up for Rave Alert in order to be prepared should an emergency occur.”

In addition, when citizens sign up for Brookhaven Alert, they will also have the opportunity to input their information and notification preferences today on the secure Smart911 online system. Their information will immediately be available to 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.  Brookhaven Alert and Smart911 are private and secure, and only made available to the 9-1-1 system in the event of an emergency.  Users can opt in or out for non-emergency notifications.
