Major intersection improvements begin In February

Ashford Dunwoody/Johnson Ferry work starts Monday, Feb. 3

Brookhaven, GA, Jan. 23, 2020 – Construction crews are scheduled to begin work on one of Brookhaven’s busiest intersections.

Beginning Monday, Feb. 3, Brookhaven begins a four-month project to improve the southeast corner of the Ashford Dunwoody and Johnson Ferry Road intersection.  The improvements include extending the right lane on northbound Ashford Dunwoody Road to create a dedicated left turn lane and a longer left/through/right turn lane. New signs and pavement markings will be installed as needed, as well as the timing of the traffic signal will be adjusted in coordination with the Georgia DOT.  Sidewalks will be widened, and sidewalks gaps will be filled along the east side of Ashford Dunwoody Road.

“This important project will greatly improve traffic flow, especially from the south end of Ashford Dunwoody, simply by reengineering our existing resources in the right of way, and straightening out the right turn lane,” said Brookhaven Public Works Director Hari Karikaran. “We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we install these necessary upgrades.”

Every effort will be made to minimize the impact to the traffic in this area as work progresses.  The project work hours will be Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Saturdays, the work hours will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be no work on holidays. The restrictive work hours (hours in which traffic lanes can be closed) will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"The City has completed seven of the ten short-term projects.  Now construction by the City is underway on the eighth short-term project.  Once completed, the northbound traffic flow will significantly improve through the intersection and provide safe passage to pedestrians and bicyclists,” said District 1 Council Member Linley Jones.  “We are making steady progress on implementing the improvements originally identified in the Ashford Dunwoody Corridor Study, created with significant community input.”

The City’s contractor, DAF Concrete, was selected by the Brookhaven City Council after a competitive bid process.  The cost of the project is $481,769.
