Brookhaven to hold public hearings for 2021 millage rate

Brookhaven, GA, June 7, 2021 – Residents are encouraged to attend upcoming public hearings for the 2021 millage rate. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, all public hearings on the 2021 millage rate will be held on a virtual platform on Zoom.  The virtual meeting links will be posted on the City of Brookhaven website: https://brookhavenga.gov/ 72 hours before each meeting.

The first will be held Tuesday, June 15, at 7 p.m. The second and third meetings may be held in person at City Hall at 4362 Peachtree Road, Brookhaven and will also be held by virtual meetings on June 29, at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. After the final public hearing, the 2021 millage rate will be formally adopted at the June 29 City Council meeting at 7 p.m.

In November 2020, the Brookhaven City Council adopted a balanced 2021 budget totaling $52.2 million in direct expenditures, defined as the total of all 13 funds minus interfund transfers. The general fund budget, which funds the day-to-day operations of the City of Brookhaven, totals $29.9 million, and represents a decrease of $5.4 million (15.3 percent) from the 2020 General Fund budget as revised. The anticipated millage rate in 2021 is 2.74 mills, the same rate which has been in effect since 2016.

Due to the revaluation of real property tax assessments, the proposed 2.74 millage rate results in an increase in property tax by 0.056 percent under the Rollback Millage rate.  Without this tentative tax increase, the millage rate will be no more than 2.684 mills.

For example, the tax decrease based on the difference between the rollback and the proposed millage rate for a homesteaded property with a fair market value of $531,451 would be approximately $11.90, and the proposed increase for a non-homestead property with a fair market value of $1,292,369 is about $28.95.

Per the city charter, Brookhaven’s millage rate is capped at 3.35.
