Art contest exhibits #BrookhavenStrong

Brookhaven Strong Art Contest

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Project is a chance to show patriotism and community pride, and honor brave first responders

Brookhaven, GA, April 6, 2020 -- Although day-to-day life has been restricted for now, creativity hasn’t, so Brookhaven is offering an outlet for artists of all ages and skill levels to show their Brookhaven spirit with the #BrookhavenStrong Art Contest. This contest is a fun way to exhibit patriotism, honor the brave first responders who sustain normalcy in these unprecedented times, and/or show pride in the community. It is also a way for artists to record a dynamic moment in history.

Artists will have until Friday, April 17, to produce art expressing appreciation of any number of first responder categories, or exhibiting patriotism or community pride. Gift cards for future use at local restaurants, courtesy of Explore Brookhaven, will be awarded as prizes in five age groups in increments of $100, $50 and $25. Winners will be featured on social media and City news publications and honored at a Brookhaven City Council meeting when public restrictions are lifted.

“We are happy to offer this creative art experience and contest to Brookhaven residents,” said District 1 Councilwoman Linley Jones. “We wanted to give our artists an outlet to show their appreciation for those helping us every day and to honor and capture their bravery and courage.  The goal is for the art to not only show the hope we are feeling, but also serve as a heartfelt, artistic ‘thank you’ to those serving on the front lines of the COVID-19 battle.”

When it comes to subject matter, the sky’s the limit! The art can be patriotic, uplifting, and/or feature a tribute for first responders, doctors, nurses or anyone in the medical field, or those providing crucial services, such as food delivery or sanitation.

The rules are simple and can be followed while still observing social distancing. Artists may submit art in any medium including mixed media, colorings, painting, sketches, sculptures, chalk art, graphic art, etc. The art must incorporate the hashtag #BrookhavenStrong. Age groups for the contest are 0-5 years; 6-10 years; 11-14 years; 15-18 years; and 19+ years.

Submit photos of the finished masterpieces via email to: News@BrookhavenGa.gov by 5 p.m. April 17. Entries must include artist name and age group. Winners, selected by a distinguished panel of local arts professionals, will be announced on Friday, April 24, via Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Nextdoor.
