What is the Census?

The Census is a population count mandated by the Constitution, to have accurate data on the population of the United States and its five territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Guam and the United States Virgin Islands).

What does the Census ask?

The Census has a short form with basic questions about you and everyone who lives in your home, such as name, age, and sex.

Who counts in the Census?

The Census counts all the people who live in your home. Be sure to count roommates, toddlers, babies, newborns, seniors, and everyone who is living within your home. Children are at high risk of being undercounted, so please be sure to count every member of your family born before April 1, 2020.

Who Should Respond to the Census?

Everyone living in the United States and its territories must answer the Census.

How to respond to the Census?

You can respond online at My2020Census.gov, by phone at 844-468-2020 or by mail with a paper form mailed to you.

Do I count in the Census if I am not an American citizen?

Yes, the law requires that everyone, whether or not they are citizens, living in the United States and its five territories (Puerto Rico, American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the United States Virgin Islands) be counted in the Census.

THE CENSUS DOES NOT REQUIRE CITIZENSHIP STATUS
Why is it important to respond to the Census?

Responding to the Census will help determine the redrawing or adjusting electoral districts based on where populations have increased or decreased. As well as how federal funds will be distributed to local communities.

How Does the Census Impact the City of Brookhaven?

The Census results impact the planning and financing of infrastructure, health care, employment, school lunches, even support for firefighters or families in need. The Census helps local municipalities obtain federal funds from their taxpayers. Annually $675 billion of federal dollars is distributed among local governments based on Census results. Be sure to be counted!

What are the important dates for the Census?

Census Day is commemorated across the country on April 1. By this date, all households will have received an invitation to participate in the 2020 census. However, you can still complete the Census through the summer months.

Does the 2020 Census have a citizenship question?

The Census does not ask whether you or anyone else in your household is a citizen of the United States.

Could my Census responses be shared with federal agencies or law enforcement to be used against me?

No, your answers are not shared. The law prevents the Census Bureau in the United States from sharing information with the police or federal agencies.
