Statement from District 4 and Mayor Pro Tempore Joe Gebbia

"As the last member of Brookhaven’s inaugural City Council still serving, I want to announce that I will not be seeking re-election for a third term.

The opportunity to serve not only the residents of District 4, but all of Brookhaven, has been a blessing and an honor.  In eight short years, we have helped guide Brookhaven’s transformation from a neglected enclave in northern DeKalb County to a focused, visionary and responsive local government for the residents it serves. In addition, we have become a leading force in economic development in the region. I am proud to have played my small role.

With that said, I believe in small government, low taxes, and term limits.  Although there are currently no term limits for Brookhaven Councilmembers, I self-imposed a two term limit on myself to serve as an example. My announcement today fulfills that promise - a promise I made to the voters on my first day in office on Dec. 17, 2012. While it is bittersweet, it is the right decision.

As we move forward through my final year, my door is open to any who seek to serve the residents of District 4.  I want to be certain all candidates are not only well positioned to carry on our momentum, but also obtain an important understanding of the culture that has enabled much of our success - a culture where ALL parties are respected, where the ability to disagree is done in a civil manner, and where the long term picture of ‘what’s in the best interest of Brookhaven’ remains the guiding light."
