Brookhaven, GA, Dec. 10, 2019 – In a unanimous decision, the Brookhaven City Council approved a rezoning and annexation of 676 parcels (approximately 2,000 residents) into the City of Brookhaven in what is believed to be the largest annexation using the 60% method in state history.

The City immediately welcomed its newest residents with a lighted welcome sign at the intersection of Briarcliff and LaVista Roads.“Welcome to Brookhaven” stickers were affixed to the rezoning signs that were erected as a condition of annexation.

"This is exciting, as the 60% method demonstrates an overwhelming, citizen led effort that bypasses the need for a referendum,” said District 4 Council Member Joe Gebbia, whose district encompasses all of the newly annexed area.  “It’s another first for Brookhaven, as this is the largest number of parcels to leverage this method in state history.”

“All of you should be commended for your Herculean effort,” said Mayor John Ernst.  “We are really excited about having this dynamic community come into Brookhaven's fold.  I hope our new residents will remain active with the City, and perhaps take leadership roles on some of our boards and committees.”

“Beginning immediately, the City will begin an assessment of the infrastructure of this community to determine what resources will be needed to bring this area up to Brookhaven standards as it pertains to parks, paving and stormwater infrastructure,” said City Manager Christian Sigman.

The Brookhaven Public Works Department is deploying street sweeping in the community over the next 48 hours.  Eighteen potholes have been immediately identified for remediation which will occur before the end of the week, weather permitting.

"I want to thank everyone who invited us to the community meetings and engaged us from the beginning,” said District 3 Council Member Bates Mattison.  “I also appreciate the foresight of the Administration for working on the service delivery strategy that dedicates funds and immediately addresses critical infrastructure issues of this newly annexed area.”

“From the beginning, I have always said I would support an annexation that makes sense in terms of its composition in terms of area and residential and commercial mix.  This annexation is logical and represents the totality of the community,” said District 2 Council Member John Park.

“I am so excited to welcome the people of LaVista Park to the City of Brookhaven.  One week before our City’s seventh birthday, this groundswell of support for local governance reminds me of the principles upon the founding of our City,” said District 1 Council Member Linley Jones.
