Post Date:08/22/2017 8:03 PM

Brookhaven, GA, Aug. 22, 2017 – Brookhaven Mayor John Ernst and the Brookhaven City Council celebrated the accomplishments of 12-year-old Malena Shipley who recently competed in the 80th FirstEnergy All-American Soapbox Derby World Championships, winning the Local Masters World Championship in Akron, Ohio.

Malena Shipley and her parents celebrate her award with the Mayor and City Council.

Malena, who has been racing since the age of 7, had to build a car using a specially designed kit; and to win, she had to come in first in every heat.  Malena won the local North Georgia Champion in the Stock, Super Stock and Masters Divisions. She was a 2016 Top Rally Point earner nationally in the Stock Division and took second place in the 2016 All American Stock Rally as well as turning in the fastest heat time of the day. On July 22, 2017, Malena competed in the 80th FirstEnergy All-American Soapbox Derby World Championships and won the Local Masters World Championship.

The City of Brookhaven declared August 22, 2017 as “Malena Shipley Soap Box Derby World Champ Day.”
